Everyone sees the final product, the gleaming resin, the beautiful wood grain, but they don’t see the moments of doubt and the challenges of the process. I’ve learned that the secret to great woodworking isn’t always a power tool or a specific resin. More often, it's about having a steady hand and a calm mind.

Here’s why I believe a woodworker can learn a lot from an artist’s focus and intention.

  1. The Patience of a Pour: Pouring a large river table requires incredible patience. You have to move slowly to avoid bubbles and watch the resin carefully as it sets. I’ve learned to embrace this quiet, meditative process, much like an artist does when tracing a thin line.

  2. Attention to Detail: In woodworking, a tiny mistake can ruin a large, expensive piece of lumber. My partner's focus on every intricate line in her mandalas has taught me the importance of a clean sanding job and a perfectly sealed surface because no detail is too small.

  3. Embracing Imperfection: While I strive for perfection, I’ve learned to appreciate the natural “imperfections” of wood, the knots, the unique grain, the natural cracks. Just as an artist might leave a certain part of a mandala uncolored for effect, I’ve learned to let the wood's natural beauty guide my hand.

  4. The Final Connection: When I deliver a piece to a client, I see their reaction to the wood, but also the tiny details we included in the design. It's the moment when the "sawdust" and the "ink" truly become one. A single, beautiful piece of art.

Pro Tip

Take a moment to breathe before you start a new step. Whether it’s mixing a batch of resin or making a crucial cut, a few seconds of focus can prevent hours of frustration.

Final Thoughts

The art of woodworking is a lot like the art of design. Both demand a steady hand, a calm mind, and an appreciation for the process. And in both, the final result is a testament to the intention you put in.
